I chose to be a PSW as I have always been interested in palliative care. In the 1980’s I spent time with friends who were at Casey House hospice in Toronto. Casey House was dedicated to men who had AIDS and whose families rejected them because they were opposed to their lifestyle.
My Father and uncle were both polio survivors and both had long lasting effects. From a young age I always wanted to be nurse.
I had cancer as a young child and spent much of my youth going to check ups and spending time in hospital. My nurses were amazing and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything but nursing.
I wanted to pursue nursing to help others during their most vulnerable times.
The intention behind this program is to help reduce loneliness and isolation that so many seniors are facing in long term care and retirement homes.
The Ontario government announced today (Nov. 18, 2020), it will spend $2.4 million on Ontario Health Teams across the province, including the South Georgian Bay Ontario Health Team, which serves Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Clearview and The Blue Mountains.
