FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hospice palliative care is a specialized form of medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness. The primary goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family. This type of care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work together with a patient’s care team to provide an extra layer of support.

Here are some key aspects of hospice palliative care:
  • Patient-Centred: Care is tailored to the individual needs, preferences, and values of the patient.
  • Symptom Management: Emphasis on relieving symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.
  • Holistic Approach: Addresses the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient and their family, not just the physical symptoms.
  • Team-Based Care: Involves a multidisciplinary team that can include doctors, nurses, social workers, spiritual advisors, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Family Support: Provides support and education to the family, helping them cope with their loved one’s illness and offering bereavement support after the patient’s passing.
  • Communication and Coordination: Ensures clear communication between all parties involved, including the patient, family, and various healthcare providers, to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding care plans and goals.
  • Hospice Care in Campbell House: Specifically for patients who are nearing the end of life (typically with a prognosis of three months or less), focusing on comfort rather than curative treatment.

Overall, hospice palliative care is about enhancing the quality of life, ensuring comfort, and providing compassionate care at end-of-life.
